With Crafters and Artists in Mind
Not enough people recognise that artists or crafters, or people who enjoy creating, struggle with the vagaries of their pursuits. For so many creativity is fundamental to our wellbeing yet it comes with many stresses and problems.
There are also arguments about nature and nurture regarding those involved in arts and crafts but I for one, being the daughter of an artist who was recognised worldwide, know from my observations of her that for her it was nature: for her this work was a fundamental need – and a natural skill that she had from a very early age. This for example is a picture that she ‘coloured in’ when she was around 8-9 years old ( in a book dated 1917) Her future was forecast. There are many others who simply learn arts and crafts and become proficient, as well as getting joy out of the activity.

The old idea that people are either “left-brained” and logical or “right-brained” and creative is a neuromyth. Research now shows that creativity involves the whole brain, with different regions and networks communicating and cooperating. Highly creative people tend to show stronger connections between systems involved in imagination, memory, attention and critical evaluation—including connections across both hemispheres. This collaboration helps the brain generate unusual possibilities, make unexpected associations and then shape them into meaningful work. For crafters and artists, creativity is not located in one special side of the brain: it reflects the remarkable ability of your brain to connect, explore, evaluate and create.
